Soil phosphorus fractions and their relation to leaf litterfall in a central Amazonian terra firme rainforest

چکیده
ABSTRACT Phosphorus (P) cycling is an important yet poorly studied aspect of the macronutrient balance in tropical rainforest ecosystems. As soil P occurs different organic and inorganic forms (fractions) with varying degrees lability, we hypothesized that these fractions will vary between types, temporally within types. Additionally, a direct influence leaf litterfall input on total fractions. We collected litter samples from three types central Amazonian lowland Brazil over five months, used modified Hedleys fractionation method to determine six fractions, also total, labile residual P. Leaf concentrations were determined colorimetrically. Soil varied across but type month interactions mostly non-significant. Some (Pi-NaOH) peaked while (Po-NaOH) fell vice versa. production around two months following wettest month. was significant predictor Po-NaHCO3, bioavailable fraction. Future studies terrestrial ecosystems should examine roles played by individual as they cycle asynchronistically differently

Measuring mosquito diversity patterns in an Amazonian terra firme rain forest.
We reanalyzed a dataset consisting of approximately 10,700 crepuscular and night-biting female mosquitoes (Culicidae) collected over 12 mo in the canopy and understorey of primary Amazonian rain forest. We investigate whether vertical habitat stratification and rainfall modified major ecological parameters of this mosquito ensemble, combining descriptive and hypothesis-testing statistics with s...
متن کاملThamnophilidae (antbird) Molt Strategies in a Central Amazonian Rainforest
—Avian molt, or the regularly scheduled replacement of feathers, is an important life history event, particularly in central Amazonian rainforest birds for which a relatively high proportion of the annual cycle can be dedicated to this process. Here, we detail molt strategies of 18 antbird species (Thamnophilidae) based on 2,362 individuals captured from lowland tropical rainforest at the Biolo...
متن کاملSpatial trends in leaf size of Amazonian rainforest trees
Leaf size influences many aspects of tree function such as rates of transpiration and photosynthesis and, consequently, often varies in a predictable way in response to environmental gradients. The recent development of panAmazonian databases based on permanent botanical plots has now made it possible to assess trends in leaf size across environmental gradients in Amazonia. Previous plot-based ...
متن کاملDoes Soil Disturbance Affect Soil Phosphorus Fractions?
Increased turnover of organic matter as a result of soil disturbance (e.g. by soil tillage) is described in principle, but the direct influence of soil disturbance on soil P turnover especially for organic farming systems has not been sufficiently proven. The objective of the study was to evaluate the short term effect of soil disturbance on different soil P fractions in a soil shaking experime...
